I can understand why one likes film. I find myself trying to "emulate" the feel of B&W film in PS far too often myself. Good to see some pros who haven't lost that magic despite their needs to publish fast. Really inspiring stuff on this web site, thanks for sharing your ideas.

some of your photos really inspires me, & i appreciate what you do.
a few weeks ago i saw on the leica homepage that the noctilux will be discontinued. i found it a bit strage since it's one of THE figurehead of leica lens engineering. now i see this 0,95 :) in the july edition of the german LFI magazine was an article about rinze van burg and his brother. they do a lot of fashion stuff with the m8 + noctilux and it looks very nice.
(as far as i know the fashion week portraits are done with the noctilux)
...but you know how this lens looks and performs. i thought it might be interesting.
cheers

last night I had a nightmare about losing my lens, being left over with a lens-less camera and thinking of buying a voigtlander lens. (not that voigtlanders are bad. not at all)
Posted by on September 12, 2008 4:28 PM
the prices are ridiculous, period. i guess leica finally admitted that they're the "dentist company" as hardly any working professional can afford a lens for 5000 euros that breaks more often than a canon or nikon. also, we both know how "special" the leica service is and that there is nothing like CPS or NPS.
however, i'm very excited about the 21/1.4 as it seems to be the PJ dream lens... no if only leica made a fullframe m - just put that nikon sensor in the camera. forget about microlens offset... ;)
Posted by on September 12, 2008 4:13 AM
it is definitely not bad gear that ruins Leica but bad management.
but as long as your nocti fits at my bessa I have no problem with that :)
Posted by on September 11, 2008 10:28 AM
ever had an r8 in your hands? You know, I'm a RF buff, but that camera is marvellous. I'd love an R9. If they had a full-frame Digital back for it, I bet others would love it too.
WHen are you going to get the new nocti and test it against the old one??
Posted by on September 10, 2008 2:38 PM
Hmmmm - a New Toyota Yaris or a Leica Noctilux?
Posted by on September 21, 2008 9:58 AM
My car is worth less than an M6 with a voigtlander 28/2.0.
i think these lenses, besides being rad as i already wrote, are just a matter of prestige for leica to build the 'ultimate' lenses (when we look at 50/0.95 and 21/1.4). And for the 24/1.4, yes there's already a prime lens with that specs from canon, but i'm sure it will be blown away, not like the 24/1.4 by canon is not really one of their best L primes anyway (as far as i've heard and seen).
the 21/3.4 is very nice. it's also nice that you can focus as close as 0.4m (where normally the limit is 0.7m for rf glass). wonder what min. focus distance the 21/1.4 will have...
of course it is. they've always been about prestige. ask how many lens blanks are ruined because of the intricate processes. it's crazy.
don't friggin' believe everything you read, mate. the canon 24/1.4 is something you have to use yourself. most of the people you read on boards and reviews are full of fucking shit and should be making photos rather than posting their opinions.
i don't read much reviews at all. i just listen to some people i trust, plus i look at the images. but anyway, not like it would matter much, how much sharper a lens is than another one at 100%
I think I would find it hard to focus with a f0.95 glass on a D3/700. How are you supposed to focus that accurately on a rangefinder? I mean, there must be 1mm of DoF at portrait distance fully open... Strange...
Wonder why Thorsten does not consider a D700 - not as machine gun as the D3, smaller, and has the same nice chip. I surely love mine.
HMMMM! lets new Uber fast glass from Leica, or pay off the car, that is a hard one. Must resist...... Going in debt for some glass is ok right, I meen really what is the problem here, just think of the possibilities for getting chicks man. Sell the car, buy a POS car, get new lens. Walk around with the knowledge that the lens on you camera costs more than the camera. Fondle it gently every now and then. Really what could honestly be better ;)
Um I thought times were tough economically around the world at the moment? Are Leica trying to make their business fail or something. Surely the market for expensive luxuries is on the decline at the moment. Are there enough Leica fondlers in the world to keep Leica in business? I think i'll pass on this one thanks, I can see the someone at Leica laughing all the way to their expensive penthouse.
as much as i love my european brethren ... i know that europe usually trails -- in terms of financial activity -- the u.s. by about a year. i think based on today's times that's gonna be six-to-nine months now ... so ... based on the fact we're not buying shit from the e.u. right now nor are we traveling there .. we'll see a bit of a downturn there by december.
given that ... why the hell would anyone introduce "boutique products" at "hermes prices."
i dunno if there are, actually. most i've been familiar with are close to death.
i don't think anyone at leica has an expensive penthouse besides the rich austrian who owns the company. ;)

Yeah, I knew that when I sold that Nocti that I had on consignment, it was pretty much the last time I was going to lay my hands on one. It's a beautiful lens, but 11K is just fucking insane. I can't imagine they will pull themselves out of the gutter with professionals if they keep jacking their prices into the stratosphere. Soon they will be boutique-only.
Btw Chris, it seems like Nikon is going to launch something interesting next year... MX format with a square sensor, probably 36x36mm so that some of the current new Nikkors can be used.
Composing for a square format is so much different than for any other format...
Oh well... Leica was always funny. Especially how they increased the price of Panasonic cameras just by putting a Leica logo on it. Lame, very lame.
And i agree about the R system. They should stay out of it for good. I wanted an R8, really badly. It's probably the sexiest looking camera i've held in my hands. But it's just not good enough. I'd have a 1V or F5 over R8/R9 anytime.
Tho i really wish i had an M body. But... i could afford an M6, but i'm just not a film guy, i never was, actually. I learned photography with a Coolpix 880, not any film camera. So i'd gladly go with digital, but i can't afford an M8. So i have to forget about an M body for some time.
Btw, the Sony A900 was announced finally yesterday. I think it's great news. Maybe the 1Ds3 price will lower a little...
And finally a new 5D is coming and... i hope it is going to have a movie mode. A 1080p would be most welcome. People laugh at Nikon for launching the movie mode in D90, but i think that the value of having a DSLR, especially a full frame DSLR with a movie mode is just... priceless. I can finally make my moviemaking dreams come true without buying or renting very expensive equipment to get the exact look that i want.
they're very funny. what you get with the leica name on the panasonic camera, though, is a way better warranty and i think that's worth something.
held an f6 in your hands?
if you get an m6, i will personally send you 20 rolls of film. i totally feel that you could make beautiful frames, mate.
nobody shoots sony, mate.
nobody.
i don't laugh at nikon for the movie mode. still photographers will be replaced by a video format with high enough reso to extract still frames. trust me on this. not tomorrow. not next year. but soon. you'll see.
I sold my noctilux about two months ago--when I did I made peace with the fact that I would never own an expensive piece of glass like that again.
Will be interesting to see how this new f/0.95 compares, and also good to see Leica is committed to releasing new products in the M lineup, even if they are crazy expensive. In the meantime, I'm smiling ear to ear with my M8.0 and 28mm F2.

i'll never sell my nocti ... there are some photos i see in my brain and know i can only achieve -- in camera, of course -- with my nocti.
honestly, your set up wit the m8 and the 28/2.0 was my favourite besides with the 75/2.0 for headshots. i'm only hoping for a completely revamped digital-m with a full-frame sensor. :)
everytime i think about buying a leica, i feel depressed. i cant afford it for the virgin life of me. F.C.: 1 Time. But i'll let you off the hook this time since it was a very small post.
f.95 that's amazing.... no wonder R&D is loosing money, that means that an "old" nocti should be available for next to nothing right? right? if only that were true, ever since they were discontinued, the price increased by 30%. I hope you get to test one so we can all drool over it!
If you sell your M6 or MP, please post it here, I'm quite interested in getting a second body and i don't care much for aesthetics. :)
no way ... old noctis have gone through the roof price-wise.
i'm going to ask for sure but i'm sure that they aren't making many of them so ... we'll see...
only my mp will ever be sold and it will be sold to a buyer who has already expressed interest at a very interesting price ... along with 5 photos with the original negatives ...
For me the main problem of the R system is the availability (second to what you said about the prehistoric state of the technology of the features), if you as an example had your 70-200mm f/2.8 going kaput and you had lots of gigs lined up you can rent the lens or even buy it -if the gigs are really upon you in terms of date- in almost any photographic store in a decent sized city in the US, while the R system is present in very few stores, it could be a problem to find someone who rents glass for that system -pretty much what happens to any brand that isn't Hassie, Mamiya, Canon or Nikon-, and that is a big, big, big minus for the system... image quality can be great but the lack of availability is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.
11,000 bucks?............ I could equip a decent studio with good gear for that quantity of money! ....... lol
that's one big step for leica, and...and a couple of thousands step back for me (and i guess some others too) in owning one. I guess i could opt get a used 35mm Leica RF...which far more feasible than getting the v2 of the M8.
it's really a shame. someone said i should be happy that collectors allow my leica equipment to hold its value: since i'm a shooter and don't plan on selling, i don't give a fuck, though. ;)
oh god. those new lenses are rad. very much so. but i'll never have the money to buy them. i'm playing around with a very old super-angulon-m 21/3.4 at the moment, borrowed from a friend :)
Posted by Thorsten O... on September 10, 2008 2:53 PM
That Super-Angulon 21mm f/3.4 is great, only mine has been lying in (someone else's pocket) so the front lens is kind of mat. Not good for shooting against the light. But it's Minolta glass, and it's soft surface. But great great lens.
man i want to smoke what those guys are smoking...11k...are you fucking kidding me. i mean...i know its a leica and all...but what about economics? market share? profit?
Posted by Thorsten O... on September 09, 2008 4:54 PM
As I said on the Leica Forum, the dentist-prices will be sky-rocketing now!
Lets see, the Nocti is probably true, but the prices ... I don't know who found them where. Let's wait and see. Thought I wouldn't be surprised if those are actually the prices (ther M8.2 should be at the same level as M8 though). Considering how many collectors buy Leica, one item at the time as time and money allow it, why not let them bleed all the way. High/low prices anyways won't influence the number of items sold to a degree where low prices would mean higher income for Leica overall. And, hmm, tra-la-la, I think you will consider those prices low when you get insight as to what else our white coat friends auz Gärmany has been up to!
As for my R-system, you just stay put. That's a great system, superior to anything else for what is can be used for. If it's of any comfort, I'll be testing a D3 soon with some fast primes and zooms. I'm sure it's a great system, but I fear the question will rather be if I want to shoot stuff that require machinegun equipment. In fact, I'm giving that a thought. As it is, I tend to lean more towards digital M style (and even more quiet than it has existed so far), than superfast anything that makes a sound. But we'll see. I might also build a wooden film camera. Did once, but that was only 6x6.
i have no doubt those prices are very close to reality. the m8.2 ... i'm sure that's how they will justify a price increase.
no doubt the r-system is a great system but even if they do a larger-than-35mm-sensor digital ... it's still irrelevant. less than .0001% of the professionals using slrs use the r's. r&d into the r system is like flushing money away, mate.
no one uses the stuff.
besides you.
but i can't wait to hear what you think about the d3. i thought it was amazing.
a pinhole is being built for me! :) out of wood. ;)
I'd be really interested in how you find the D3. Everyone I know who has tested it so far (that's a lot of people, mainly through the mag) has loved it. Many of them didn't want to like it, as they use different systems... some of them used different systems, rather!!! If you ever want to get rid of your R-system.... ;-) I think we'll see a few more full-frame sensors within a couple of weeks, and it would be interesting to see how they compare against the current Nikon batch too.
