I can understand why one likes film. I find myself trying to "emulate" the feel of B&W film in PS far too often myself. Good to see some pros who haven't lost that magic despite their needs to publish fast. Really inspiring stuff on this web site, thanks for sharing your ideas.

Hey Chris,
I bumped into Mark when he was here in the Philippines. Handed him a couple tiny calling cards. Hope he gets to hand one to you. He said he'd probably see you next week. I might drop by December, maybe we can kick it then.

honestly, i'm happy we didn't hear about the horribly irrelevant r-system...

I'd love to just try it one day...I'm just very curious. Not that I would have any use for it but I can see people in fashion and advertising putting it to good use.

I think the appropriate term is "CILF," non?

im sticking with my 1DS maybe leicas next venture should be adapting their glass to other cameras (lol) especially the r lenses that have probably been sitting around for years id buy a 35 lux for my canon the second they introduced it. I KNOW you would too haha
Posted by  on September 23, 2008 9:00 AM
Sorry, Chris...as ugly as it is to hold I've been told (by someone reputable) that an R10 is in the "conception/planning" stages. Obviously that's a far cry from production, but they are thinking of continuing a film SLR line.
Posted by Chris on September 23, 2008 2:46 PM
i know they are "fully committed to the r-line." in that context they're idiots. i think they have a warehouse full of unsold lenses they need to move. ;)

I was just reading about the S2 over at the RRF (sorry) yesterday. Looks to be a very cool system. I was think ing that there will not be alot of demand for it either, given the cost of it. But you never know, It may very well be the next best think for all the studio pros out there.
Posted by Chris on September 23, 2008 3:01 PM
oh i'm sure those experts and amazing shooters must've had all sorts of shit to say about it. ;)

there are a lot of people entrenched into the h3 systems ...

most importantly the rental houses.

it'll be interesting for sure.
Posted by  on September 24, 2008 10:35 AM
Well you know how the RFF'er are. Pompas and insecure, at times ;)

I would think that those who are H3 devoties Will probably not but into the new S system leica. I know I would not if I allready had an invesment in the Hassy's.

But the rental houses just might pick it up as an added rental, some pros may want to try it out. Time will tell. I really think Leica should have taken a different approach though. May be a new digital M for starters.
Posted by  on September 23, 2008 5:54 AM
it is indeed an incredibly sexy camera. the R8 was sexy too. just so... impractical in the first place, not to mention how impractical it got when 1Ds3 buried 35mm film forever.

to me, as a pixel peeper for a living (at least for now), i knew since a long time that i can recreate the look of any colour or b&w film with digital, but i can't recreate the amazing DR and lack of grain with any film. the medium format was the last big bastion of film and i thoroughly enjoy seeing it destroyed now that sensors larger or equal to 35mm frame get so abundant.

the very last bastion of film imho are the rangefinders. i always spat at rangefinders because i used the wrong ones. old russian ones. appaling to use. and providing not so great results. but when i first played with m7 and mp i knew that this will never die and will never be replaced by a compact digital camera...

i'm really ecstatic about the S-system. i will not buy it. maybe if i win a lottery, then yes, maybe. but i surely hope to use it, rent it. experience it. i always thought that although hassies provided awesome results, and so did mamiyas, their ergonomics were such that the camera was always an obstacle. a very fine but cumbersome tool. and i sincerely hope that the S-system is a nail in the coffin for mamiya and will also give hassy something to think about, with their giant impractical machinery.

the S-system, along with, hopefully, the MX format by Nikon (37 mp, 36x36mm) will give a bit of fresh air into modern photography...

anyway, so far i can't wait to put my hands on my own 5D mark II as soon as it appears on the shelves. till then i need to learn adobe premiere or something like that ;)
Posted by  on September 25, 2008 11:05 AM
you got it all quite wrong. but it's okay.
Posted by Chris on September 23, 2008 3:06 PM
i dunno about burying film forever. i haven't seen a print from digital claiming to be one film stock or another that really looks like what i'm used to seeing from a real print from whatever film stock.

they're not exactly abundant, mate.

i'd be happy to have a full frame rangefinder! dunno if it would replace any of my m's but i'd be very happy to have one for sure.

like yourself i'm stoked leica has blazed a trail different from the clunkiness of the 'blads and mamiyas!

we'll see if nikon actually does that.

yep, i'm first on a certain list for that new mark 2! can't wait!!!!!
Posted by  on September 23, 2008 3:15 AM
RRRRR

you know Chris, I bought one. But I told only Thorsten :) Now I had to tell you.

I hoped in a new DMR, full frame. Not that I'd buy one, but it would have kept R system afloat. To me, an R10 should still be film. And maybe a DR10 or a R10D for digi-boys. But for me the M8 should have been film... and the M8D or whatever. You know, I'm a purist.

Still, I'm happy they made a new Nocti and that it sin't some kind of "DX lens".
Posted by Chris on September 23, 2008 2:48 PM
i'm not saying it's a bad camera at all ... it's just not a line that a struggling company needs to make.

given the s2 you're not going to see a fullframe r for a very long time, mate.

dunno if they need to have another film-based model as the current ones are pretty damn good.
Posted by  on September 23, 2008 3:11 AM
Will probably make great pictures, but Leica's R still look to me as if designed in a Soviet Union era car factory. Nowhere as sexy as the M's.

Posted by  on September 23, 2008 6:00 AM
totally disagree. R8/R9 in black it's the sexiest camera ever. well now, the s2 is sexier, actually.
Posted by  on September 23, 2008 8:55 AM
To me, it looks overweight. A want a grip like on the Olympus E-1 (best designed frame ever).

when nikon first annouced their really high shutter speeds
they took a picture of an aircraft undercarriage.. landing
hope they try some action shots then
Posted by Chris on September 22, 2008 9:45 PM
dunno how much it'll be used for action, though. it's not really the market they're going after.
Posted by  on September 22, 2008 9:08 PM
LOL only 20,000 pocket change.

I just read that Kodak released a new 50MP sensor that is going into the new Hassy. I think said going for 40k ... ohh there is also the new sony full frame coming soon let me know how it is if you get a chance to use it.
Posted by Chris on September 22, 2008 9:46 PM
compared to the blad that's not much, actually.

especially the new 50mp.

i wouldn't ever consider an actual sony-branded camera, though. i think the sensor will make it's way into a nikon since they don't make their own sensors.

Rrrrrrr RRRRRrrrr!
Posted by Chris on September 22, 2008 9:46 PM
you're nostalgic. i know. ;)
Posted by Thorsten O... on September 22, 2008 9:01 PM
It's a super-interesting camera and concept, mostly because it's back to basic in the way that the qualities the M from 1908 introduced is in this one.

And you haven't been listening. This is the future S system, from which R10 and several other R cameras will arise. They might use both S and R lenses.

It's just different camera for different people. Forget Nikon and Canon. That's another story, another level in the evolution ;-)

And I'll get a real fondlers piece tomorrow. Only 200 made. It starts with an R.

Rrrrrrrrr!

Posted by Chris on September 22, 2008 9:50 PM
i think it's great they're pushing the boundaries of what sensor size is contained in a dslr body. good for them. they blazed new territory back in the day with doubling the size of typical-for-the-era cine film and ... here's a leica. i would love it if they redefined the market hasselblad has pretty much locked up.

this camera won't be available for a while. i think depending on how it actually does in the market will dictate if you get to see a new beloved-but-irrelevant-when-it-hits r. ;)

the dmr is no evolution, mate. ;)

in the world i work in daily and the world you "dabble in" ... it's either nikon or canon with an editor pushing your material to be "first out" or you're dead. that's the world i live in for the most part.

200 made. um ... is it a commemorative danish royalty edition of something?

in gold?

you'll see they'll forget about the r. there are like 10 people in the world who own them. ;)
Posted by  on September 22, 2008 8:42 PM
hope to see one of these added to your stable of fine tools mate. Interesting styling and I am surprised at how small the LCD screen is. The price is horrific though.
Posted by Chris on September 22, 2008 9:52 PM
not anytime soon, mate. this would be something i'd either borrow or rent.

i was gonna say something about the lcd screen but ... they're still married to that extra-bottom attachment scheme. they want you to buy more shit. they couldn't have just incorporated that into the design thus giving themselves more space for a bigger screen. no, they want the eye surgeons to push an extra procedure so they can afford the booster or whatever the fuck it'll be.
Posted by  on September 22, 2008 8:27 PM
Holy shit, that is one helluva camera, alright. I'm hoping I discover a long-lost relative of mine has bequeathed me their Leica collection! Until then, I've gotta do the living-vicariously thing.

I just caught up on a couple of your entries, and though it's belated -- I'm sorry to hear about your friends, too. That sucks in a way words can never come close to describing... all I can say is, I hope that they're able to return their lives and loved ones soon enough.

Fuckin' McCain... *sigh*
Posted by Chris on September 22, 2008 9:53 PM
unless you're already using medium format digital or just rich and untalented like most leica users ... there will be no use.

never come close to describing for sure.

fuckin' mccain.

the new 5D is where my interest is.

if you havnt seen the stuff yet check out what Vincent Laforet has put up about it

totally groundbreaking for a dlsr footprint instead of the the bulky examples of medium format digital.

screen size isn't remarkable at all though.

you and me both on the 5d. cannot wait to make some videos i've been planning.

yes, i've seen it! not bad. he's on my rss.
