I can understand why one likes film. I find myself trying to "emulate" the feel of B&W film in PS far too often myself. Good to see some pros who haven't lost that magic despite their needs to publish fast. Really inspiring stuff on this web site, thanks for sharing your ideas.

Hey Chris,
I bumped into Mark when he was here in the Philippines. Handed him a couple tiny calling cards. Hope he gets to hand one to you. He said he'd probably see you next week. I might drop by December, maybe we can kick it then.

Happy Friday Chris,
It's Donato's foster daughter...he adopted her when she was 13 and now she's a bright 20 year old interning with Tarina. Really wonderful.

Hope you and the lovely lady are well! x

@darren: no shit. i'm getting rid of my zf 50 and the nikon fm2a.

expect the canon-zeiss stuff 'round mid-december! :)

didn't we talk about zeiss for canon a while back?
Posted by Darren Aba... on September 17, 2008 3:47 PM
Yes, we did! Now I'm really salivating for it. I will get a complete set of primes to replace my Canon zooms.

@richard: it's just a question of what i do with the time, actually. :)

You Chopped off poor little M's Jewels???
I'm calling PETA on you, you bastard!
Wait, you don't want a cute, horny small furry friend humping your leg at inopportune moments??
Where;s Ms, Palin when needed....
Now about the cameras and lenses I wont be able to afford due to a 7-10 Trillion bailout.
Who Voted for payment of that little dinner check coming due?
Joshu just howled for the first in five years that we owned him(still a complete dog on so many levels)
Funniest thing he's done to date(not counting the hiding the leftovers from the Great Cookie Heist).
MY Sympathy to the newer better M.
And Palin seems to be free at the moment for stud service....what a lost opportunity for all concerned.

palin would have bitten them off with no anesthesia, mate.

m just howled! no shit. the other morning. i was shocked.

palin? a stud service? hmm ... only if she's waiting with a turkey baster. ;)

Joshu would have gotten a piece of her witch nose as a exchange(Being small for a Japanese Chinn's means "don't Diss me too far Bitch!!! I will get a piece of YOU.)
A true New Age American....
Personally, i would have taken a Large Print NWT Bible and given her a touch of the "Word" to digest later....
Poor Mr. Macain.....i hope he got more than Joshu did when he met his first neutered cat...must post the encounter here soon.

love the surreptitious portrait of the girl in the cafe. who does bring a camera into the toilet?

i've been trying to tell the impatient contestants. was a little bit more reserved than you, though the sentiment matched almost exactly.

you can see by how long this has taken to reply that i had a day of fighting fires. ;-) hope yours (again) wasn't as perilous.
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 8:17 PM
thanks, love.

someone who doesn't want it to go missing, of course. ;)

thank you! they'll have to wait ... there are several different people who have to look at the submissions and not all of them are on one continent.

nope ... no real fires today. sorry to hear you had some to put out. :(
Posted by equivoque on September 15, 2008 8:45 PM
hahaha... i thought that as i wrote it... about the camera in toilet.

the fires are gone now, and i have a big bottle of chimay blue waiting for me... you'll be happy to know.

wishing you an easier workweek. ;-)

@cassie: i'm sure he'll visit to see his girls, no?
Posted by  on September 19, 2008 6:57 PM
of course... he's just doesn't want to live there... and he will be supporting them to the maximum for years to come ;)
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 8:00 PM
@robert: don't worry about the camera know it all's .. just tell them to go to kenrockwell, rff and theonlinephotographer ... they'll be in good company. ;)

Haha, love that photo of Jamie teaching M to drive :)
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 8:01 PM
he's learning quite quickly, actually. it's just the pedals are a bit of a bitch for his spaniel legs.
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 4:35 PM
@scott: no one, mate, no one. that said ... they are excellent places for making surreptitious photos of people in personal moments.

Zeiss has announced a 50mm f1.4 and an 85mm f1.4 for EOS moun0 (ZE mount). A 21mm f2.8 is coming soon as well. I guess you won't have to get a D3 to use Zeiss glass on digital. What's interesting is that their is no aperture ring on these lens', looks like Zeiss actually put quite a bit of work into these lens', they're coded and everything!
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 2:02 PM
just saw the email. i wake late.

nope ... won't have any reason to get a d3!

i'm sure they did a deal with canon to get it all correct! very exciting!
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 1:11 PM
Great slices of life Chris! As always, I enjoyed looking through them :)
M did look like he was silently begging to keep his nuts... or just the fact I put my self in his place, I would be doing some major eye contact.

Yeah and about the contest, I thought "photographers" were good at being patient... some of the comments were getting way to pushy and sarcastic.
500 entries is no easy task. I can’t begin to imagine how hard it must be... and going through the history.

Hope you’re doing great!
Take care!
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 2:00 PM
thanks, richard.

in fact, he was ... alas, though, j had her way and off went the nuts. poor spaniel.

honestly, i heard about the comments i didn't read them.

very well, thanks!

hope you are as well.
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 11:47 PM
Its better you don't read them. Wouldn't want to spoil all the basket because of a bunch rotten apples.
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 10:09 AM
that video is effin hilarious.

i've never heard of eateries having grades. i guess philadelphians don't believe in that. would have saved me from many a disappointing meal.

love the shot of the girl in the café. now show us more! at least you kept the political rants to a minimum in this post. ;)
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 2:03 PM
amazing, right?

doesn't quite save you from wasting money but at least you know there aren't rats in the flour. ;)

yeah, yeah, yeah.
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 9:22 AM
Baldies, hehe... ;)

Cafe's are fun. I wonder how aware they are of the things around them. I know when I'm drinking coffee, trying to read.. or whatever, I'm never completely in it.. there is always the "what weirdo is going to come out of line to come sit next to me, smelling like BO or some god-awful drugstore cologne, breathe heavy or cough near my cup... " I think that just shows how much people suck... because it happens... and then they try to talk to me like I'm their therapist. Whatever.

b's sunglasses are quite wicked... I have the same, I think ;) I look very out of place wearing them here.. meh..

That pic of me and Truly says much about our personalities... hahaha! Nice ;)

Sofas everywhere here, too... a sign I think.

Off to Wisconsin to visit my fam tomorrow ;) ..including my sis. Hope you're week is nice in Hot/Autumn LA..

(It's been in the 60's and raining for the past 4 days here)

Love as usual! -Cassie

Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 2:18 PM
yep, baldies.

lotsa shit goes on when you drink coffee. hmm...

at least they won't be outta place for long, right?

glad you liked the photo of you and your sis.

sad sofas there as well? wonder where they all go.

raining for 4 days sucks. we have no rain in sight.

cheers!!!
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 7:18 PM
serious about the coffee thing! crazy shit goes on at Starby's!

right on... June, baby!

Sad sofas should migrate to W Hollywood so all the damn stray cats have somewhere to chill ;) ... a field of sad couches covered in stray cats.. hm...

Ha ha ha! The wiener comercial was great, thank you for the morning laugh. I sense a little angst in you :). Sorry to hear that M lost his N, poor little guy, Neve is going in next month to get her lady bits removed :(. Whats all this DSLR hate as of late, I know they are not the best for street, but you know its all some people have, not every one can shoot a rangefinder you know ;) I was gonna take the old Leica 3C for a spin today, but its a rainy day again due to good old Ike sending all this rain up to Michigan. Hopefully it will wash away the filth and when all is said and done I can get out and make some film for a change. 7K for the lux huh?! I wonder how long and how much blood I would have to sell to get that. Jesus (as in lawn service, not on the cross) Christos what could be next another tri-elmar? No more R system for now could be good news and free up a little cash for the company, but that will just meen the hoarders will be snatching up whatever is left to shelve away. Never to be used again.

Hey when is the judging going to be done, ha ha ha! Sorry just fuckin' with ya, I had to do it ya know. :) whay are people so impatient to find out that they lost, it takes as long as it takes, hell over 500 photos to look thru, that would take a while for any one to go thru.

Good to see Cassie and You got to meet up, I'm sure it was a good time, she sure is happy about the upcomming move to California. I would love to move, not to Cali, but to Chicago. One day maybe, because to tell the truth Detroit sucks! I do need to get down to the (Detroit) city soon and take some photos though. Old Tiger stadium is finally being demolished to make way for something new, I hope.

Best wishes to you and the family, from the very wet and dirty Mitten.
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 2:21 PM
when i saw that damn commercial i almost fell off of the couch. thank god for youtube.

no slr-hate going on it's just that i get the most shit from digital-slr-street shooters. ;) and ... they just don't know. ;)

500 is indeed quite a lot.

we only had an hour but, yeah, it was totally cool.

everyone would love to move to cali!!!!!

best to you guys as well.
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 7:13 PM
'cept the X, hehehe!
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 3:08 PM
I ran into a camera Know it all at the mall today, you are right, some slr shooters are oblivious to rangefinders. Told me my G2 was "neet". He wanted to see a preview of what I shot. I told him it was film, he had a odd look on his face after that.
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 7:02 AM
well...

if shot monochrome on camera with the new zeiss ze lenses???

then

b) buy their gear and store it in a vault only to be used during grandkid's birthdays or even their occassional granny-porn sessions

Ok... i just can't immagine that scene but makes me laugh my ass off!

cheers,
ovi

PS: I must try pinot? where do you buy it from? i'm into wine lately...
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 2:23 PM
if shot monochrome on a canon means you're still shooting an slr. ;)

sadly, i kinda imagined it after i typed it. makes me have a really acidic taste in my mouth. ;)

pinot noir. there are many types. some of the best are coming from oregon.
Posted by  on September 16, 2008 6:54 AM
however... bourgogne?? somehow more near to italy!

i love porto wine but is probably far from the pinot noir! have to order a bottle at the winery!

cheers you rangefinder bitch!

I didn't even know about the 21/1.4. I know what I'll be dreaming about tonight...

... a winning lottery ticket.
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 2:24 PM
or the zeiss ze mount, right?
Posted by Darren Aba... on September 16, 2008 2:42 PM
Oh, shit. I'd sell my soul if Zeiss would release a ZE mount.

Waitaminit.... It suddenly occurred to me that you said "the" ZE mount... ::goes to Google "Zeiss ZE"::

HOLY SHIT! Expect to see all my EF glass on eBay tomorrow!

all you dslr-monochrome-converters ... one day i hope you find out.

Oh, we know Chris, we know. That's why we all still have those small digicams with us like the Fuji F31fd.

Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 2:26 PM
;)

don't know anything about the little digicams besides that leica/panasonic one and the g9 but the g9's not that small.
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 4:48 AM
dude whats the difference between A's and B's etc, what they stand for?
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 2:27 PM
a means they meet more than 90% of the health regulations. b means more than 80%. c means you don't want to eat there. d .. means it could be shut down soon.
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 4:46 AM
Poor dog.
lol - I see you trying hard to keep it politics free!
Yea, people look a bit anxious in the photography page... Well... I just followed you here... I wasn't expecting equivoque, for example - that was a good surprise... :) Contest? What contest? ;)
Zomg... That commercial...
Always a good time reading your blog... Have a great week!
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 2:28 PM
poor pup.

very hard to do that.

people are always anxious. i think it means they're also selfish and don't realize organizers have much to do in their lives besides the contest.

you have a great week as well!

everyone for sure.
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 4:20 AM
.95 eh? Looks like they just wanted to finally get the annoying "But the canon's faster..." remarks out of there. ;)
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 2:31 PM
they didn't care about the canon as the canon sucks.

i think it needed a revision for some time.
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 4:17 AM
too bad they dont have Hästen in germany, which is where im heading next..

I love the shots, its awesome to see your airport street photos, i was actually looking at connections to maximize my layover time.. montreal and amsterdam ;)

Thanks for the laughs, there was a few of them in this one ;)

No more R!
Posted by Chris on September 15, 2008 2:33 PM
"maximize my layover time"? great for saving money but ... no one in their right mind would ever do this. ;)

glad you liked the laughs.

not no more r but ... the r plan looks to have been delayed. hopefully it's gonna be scrapped.
Posted by  on September 15, 2008 3:24 PM
Haha, no one who spends as much time in airports as you do, would do that. Ive been inspired by your airport shooting ;)

wont happen again probably ;)
