I can understand why one likes film. I find myself trying to "emulate" the feel of B&W film in PS far too often myself. Good to see some pros who haven't lost that magic despite their needs to publish fast. Really inspiring stuff on this web site, thanks for sharing your ideas.

Hey Chris, I bumped into Mark when he was here in the Philippines. Handed him a couple tiny calling cards. Hope he gets to hand one to you. He said he'd probably see you next week. I might drop by December, maybe we can kick it then.

some of your photos really inspires me, & i appreciate what you do.
Hi. We just started here on Uber.com and we really love the site. We can't believe it is shutting down. Is there any way you think it will be "saved" or is it gone forever? We sell replica jewelry and handbags and got the username "replicajewelry", it was perfect. I am originally from China, moved to the US when I was very young (now 30), just moved back to Shanghai. I work full-time for a German company here, but run my Replica Jewelry and Handbag website www.wholesaleanywhere.com with a couple of friends the rest of my time. Anyway, I just thought I would make some friends in the last couple of days on Uber and see where everyone is going next, back to facebook or myspace or on to another spot. Let me know.
I am incredibly bummed. I know I've hardly every commented, but I've followed your work since you've been on DA and I've loved reading your posts here. I'll look forward to watching you on the new blog.

so now it's official - september 29th is d - day. i never really got around to posting more and i wish i had
i shave been thinking of setting up a blog or a place to put some work.. but i think that i've really not been serious about it.
i will follow your work and would love to keep erading what you write...
but viz a viz what you said earlier (i can't quite remember where) i dont think that you should feel bad about introducing people to uber and now its shutting down
i think that you should feel good because you did a lot of people a huge favour by introducing them to something so wonderful.
i dont really have a gallery or a blog or anything at the moment, should i still send an email to photocontributor - in case i manage to set something up in the near future?
i guess deviantart is all i have for now. i've basically stopped using that.. but still.. anyway.... thanks for the photocontributor information.... im really glad you've decided to continue to write
you were one of the things that made uber "uber" cool....
so this makes me happy even though uber has come to an end. i hope the employees find work soon as well. i hope they find a way out.
cheers (somewhat)

ahh shit, how depressing. This was my first blog site i've used... absolutely loved my stay here. not sure where to go from here actually... any ideas for some decent photog blog sites?
Posted by on September 26, 2008 3:37 AM
Just start a paypal account and we can all donate and then you can use the money to fund the site for at least one more month and have time to set up a way for subscribers! Please! Uber is such an amazing site! We can save it somehow!

Sad to hear. I'm on photrade.com which is like flickr but pay you for page views with google adsense, you can sell your work and they have tool to protect images, unlike Flickr. The irony is that I just got a call today from the Photrade staff since I've been quite active and they want me to vouch for the company as they are also looking for financing. But with the demise of Uber, it kind of feels like foreshadowing for Photrade, though I will do my best because I like to support the little guy. While Flickr is great in many ways for photosharing, I'm unimpressed with their attitude towards its users in terms of profit sharing and protecting rights... and so I drift even closer to Photrade. We shall see.
Sorry to hear about the loss, Chris! I do hope you find a new place soon.
Too bad to hear this, after I actually just set up my page rather then simply having a account.
Glad to hear that the contest isnt a bust, i didnt submit but i do want to see who won it.
When I started to read this I almost thought that the Iguana would be coming back. But this idea seems like it will be a pretty good one.
Im thinking that I am going to start up my own soon, the basis for mine will be that in the next few weeks I will be starting to try to break into the assisting/retouching world and keep shooting on my own. so hopefully it will give me enough to talk about

So sad. Raises some questions though. Anyone know the answers?
1. How do we export our blog posts to another site? I know you can import blogs TO Uber...anyone know a program where we can EXPORT blogs? 2. What is another site where you can have multiple pages? 3. how much longer do we have until the site shuts down?
I am so sad.
Posted by on September 25, 2008 11:58 AM
Fuck.
Uber is like my home, I have been travelling the world for over a year and Uber is the place where I feel like all my stuff is. It is where all my stuff is. I'm broke as sin but would pay to use this service, theres nothing else like it out there that compares.
What date is the shut down? How long do I have before my blogs are deleted? How can we stop it?
It's my travel journal man!
Posted by on September 25, 2008 7:40 AM
i was afraid this could happen one day... however even if it was growing and had a lot of bugs to handle with it really was interesting for the persons joining...
off to facebook!
sad!
cheers, ovi

hey chris, any word about setting it up so it runs itself? like subscriptions and such? its such a waste lose a great place where you actually find folks with a whole shitload of talent. i don't have a flicker and deviantart kinda started sucking when it grew and blew a stitch talent wise. i wouldn't mind paying a few dollars to keep things moving. gonna miss all the blogs and cool images from everyone.
sad shit.
oh yeah, the crash story was on the news here this morning. hope those two guys are doing well.

This is not so good! i mean this is really really sucks! I love Uber and all my friends here...and i'm meeting lots of people…. even though just a virtual friendship but i can feel everyone's sincerity......and this is the place where I found my cousin that I've never met!!!!! grrrrrrrrrrr....
i love uber & my friends here so much that’s why most of my days im spending surfing on Uber for hours, i mean everyday my whole day spent on UBER!
I wouldn't mind if we have to pay monthly just to save uber.... can we do that?
Posted by on September 25, 2008 3:55 AM
Bummer, Dont start crying yet though, you never know what can happen with a little positive intent...
Be patient, one way or the other it will work out...
Love the site, so I have to believe it will continue.
Be good Chris and thanks again for everything...

And if us, the members of uber, are this upset, I can't imagine what the uber team must be feeling........ :(
Posted by on September 25, 2008 5:26 PM
Pretty bad : ( It's so hard for us to see this happen too...
!!!!!!!! I am speechless... When I first started seeing news of this around, I thought it was a fucking joke! But I noted that it's not April 1st. Then I thought it might be a bug. Y'knw, those spyware shit. THEN I READ YOUR POST. And now I'm shocked, sad and speechless... :(
I haven't been the most active of uber members, but I still don't wanna see this go! It's too soon! It's only been slightly more than a year and and...! Damn, this sucks.
Is there no other way out at all?
Posted by on September 25, 2008 3:51 AM
Wow, wasn't expecting this. What can I say, sorry to all the people that run Uber and I'm sad that all this work wonderful work that people have displayed will be lost. See you at the next cafe brothers and sisters!
Posted by on September 25, 2008 3:30 AM
Gosh. Photography is going down the drain for me lately. First my agency, PhotoShelter collection, pulled the plug. Then uber. So first I lost my commercial side, then I lost a place were friends where around...
Damn. Really.
Posted by on September 25, 2008 3:06 AM
This is a real blow to me, I feel sorry for the people involved.
Posted by on September 25, 2008 2:52 AM
Omg, this sucks. i love uber. like, this is my most updated page everr. :(
Posted by on September 25, 2008 2:19 AM
For what uber offers, i actually would pay for access to premiums..
Worst thing is i have 2500 photos hosted here.. un-archiving everything to put on a personal site or whatever is really going to blow. but i bear no ill thoughts to anyone for that.. shit happens.
give the boys our love, and thank them for the time :)
see you on that other page
Posted by on September 25, 2008 9:59 AM
I'm right there with you, Obsidian-Fox, only to the tune of 1200 though.
This is such horrible news!! I get more profile veiws a day on uber than on my myspace and i have more friends on myspace in general and i personally know more of my friends.
To me that just shows the type of community uber is! The people on this site are so amazing and friendly. Thats why if i was to post my blog somewhere else it just wouldnt be the same. Sure uber has the best features and so on but i think its the uber community which makes it what it is......
:(
Posted by on September 24, 2008 11:48 PM
Damn. This sucks. Uber's such a nice place too.
Hopefully they'll get enough funding to at least buy time until they can figure out other ways to draw in revenue.
Premium accounts for a fee seems to be the norm around certain websites similar to Uber..Why not give that a try?
Research on how many people are willing to avail of a premium account, at what price, etc. and then show that data to the "financiers". That is, if they haven't done that yet..
Posted by on September 24, 2008 11:13 PM
Why did those people lost their jobs? Can't you just hire people to work?Or do you think Uber users can pay a monthly fee for using Uber? Because I really lover Uber and I wouldn't mind if there is a montly fee.
Posted by on September 24, 2008 10:12 PM
i'm a big fan of your work, and i've been reading your blog for a long, long time now (a big fan of your blog too then i guess, haha), and well, this is unexpected. i was trying to get the hang of uber for a while, and was planning on working more on it sometime soon...
and well, like i said, this was unexpected. i always thought this site would be around for a long time, cause there's so many talented people on here! this honestly seemed like a more professional place than deviantart or flickr.
i hope you continue to blog (about wankers, the absurdity of the us government, dogs, the usual)!
Posted by on September 24, 2008 9:47 PM
I sincerely thank you Mr Weeks and your team for putting together such a great photography/community site. I enjoyed it very much although my present here is very minute.
I really hope Uber will stay online and hope those "financiers" find a way ...

Is there any way to import my uber blogs to another blogging site like say, livejournal? ick..assuming all these uber entries will be deleted?
Posted by on September 24, 2008 9:26 PM
Omg, NOO!! I love Uber! I hope they can find a solution or something. ohh man.. this is so sad.
Posted by on September 24, 2008 9:09 PM
I would pay a fee too. Please isn't there anything we can do to NOT shut this site? A fundraiser...something?!
Posted by on September 24, 2008 9:02 PM
Will all of our blogs be deleted? (please let me know when you know)
I know you've got a lot going on right now.
Posted by on September 24, 2008 9:00 PM
Shit.... Well i retract my statement (incidently made yesterday) about being able to do all the things on Uber you can with Clickbooq. For free Sucks... majorly. Off to talk to a web designer and find a spare 500 bucks.
Posted by on September 24, 2008 8:35 PM
its the end of the world as we know it... seriously... considering all things...I suppose not being able to use our blog medium puts things into perspective. then again---its a great distraction from reality. * not sure I understand all the dynamics as to what happened here--but perhaps subscriptions are a good idea. *
Posted by on September 24, 2008 8:12 PM
No fuckin way. This place is way too amazing to shut down. I'll bookmark your new url as soon as i stop being lazy :)
Posted by on September 24, 2008 7:41 PM
Since becoming a stay at home mom, now disconnected from the art world I once was a part of myself, Uber has been my only real connection to that world. I'm so saddened by this..............sigh.
Posted by on September 24, 2008 7:38 PM
Man, that's fucked up.
UBER is a wellspring of talented photographers...and there it goes, down the drain.
I'll send an email to and bookmark the Photo Contributor page. Good luck with this new endeavor. Will try to contribute some the small photos I have.
Cheers!

fucking sucks, i really love this site
Posted by on September 24, 2008 7:30 PM
Noooooooo! I'd just got my website sorted on here and I can't think of anywhere else that I could make something that looks so professional for free! :( I really hope someone finds a way to save this little community as there's nothing else like it on the internet. Lots of people have asked me where I made my site so I'm sure there'll be more people signing up soon if it keeps going! Can we turn it in to a charity and all donate what ever spare pennies we have?
Posted by on September 24, 2008 7:29 PM
It's weird, hearing this makes me realise how much I like it over the alternatives. Another small community dies while the big get bigger.
Posted by on September 24, 2008 7:17 PM
Hey guys-
it's nice to see all of your comments here. If only we had started a subscription service a couple months ago! It's very hard for all of us at Uber, I've been with the team since before we launched and it's honestly heartbreaking for me to see this happen. Yesterday was a very very sad day for me.
I have joined the Facebook group that Thorsten set up and I hope to see you there too. It's been a real pleasure seeing all the photography and wonderful sites you've all come up with. If anyone needs an assistant to carry their equipment around, I'm available and living in LA ; )
Posted by on September 24, 2008 7:04 PM
Uber is just a damn cool place, I was lucky enough to have you turn me on to this place during their beta. Any chance of them going to like a $5.00 a month sub fee or something?
Posted by on September 24, 2008 6:51 PM
oh no that sucks! i've tried so many blogging sites, and i've settled onto uber because i think its great. i hope uber stays much longer & i hope someone finds a way to save it lol
Posted by on September 24, 2008 6:48 PM
yeah i was wondering how much money would each dude have to send for uber to have them continue, im sure it wouldnt be that much... at least for as europeans considering the course of USD... ;)
im a fucking lazy bloggger but i mostly have nowt to say someone else hadnt already said so... ill just try and keep on workin on my photo shit and get the fuck out of this university photo course :D

I am terribly sorry to read this news :( I really hope and wish the great people in the staff of this site can overcome this crisis -even if it means shutting down this place- what's important in the end isn't the site, is the people that as you said worked 16 hours a day to get us such a spiffy place to hang out, what matters is that they are able to survive the crisis with minimal bruising to their everyday life in this whole shit storm wall street crisis.
I hope the problems up there aren't hitting you buddy... a hug from the 3rd world and my best wishes to your loved ones, and a special hug for all the uber team.

I'm in denial mode. I am. I've written a few of my wealthiest friends and this is not happening. This is a cool project with social people behind and lots of great artists, writers and all on board.
OH CRAP-- I also just ordered tons of business cards with my uber address on them! Honestly, I would pay for this site too. It's everything I want in one place, plan and simple. WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP?

This is the worst news I've had for a long time. (I've had some pretty bad news lately too, but that didn't affect so many people.)
This might be a terrible question, but... how much would it cost to save Uber? Surely there would be a grant available. If not, ask for donations. I know that there are enough fans that it could be saved.
Fuck. Fuck.... fuck fuck fuck.
Damn.
Whatever happens, I hope that all my new friends on here will stay in touch with me.
I was so close to closing it down too, to focus on Uber. Man, I can't tell you how upset I am.... this is the only place where everything still seemed ok.
I guess I'm just going to have to get a life again, heh?
Well.... if you can save it, great... if not, thanks for sharing so much of your incredible talent with us; your amazing photos, your great writing, your rants, your doggies, your new kit and your passion for photography. I'm gonna miss it! I'll email you at that address, and I just pray that it works as well as [I thought] this did.
First, what a hard time for all the real stake holders, and by real stake holders, I am referring to people whose blood, sweat, and tears are at risk! Such a sad shame. Words lack what is required to convey the compassion I feel for these people. Second, regardless of what happens, I personally do not regret following you over from dA. It has been and is a great experience. I have enjoyed getting to know Nhat and lots of people here. My time here has been well spent here no matter how it all turns out.
Posted by on September 24, 2008 5:30 PM
Wow! This really sucks! I just can't believe it. This makes me really sad if it occurs that Uber should disappear.
As an independent musician, I was so happy with the Uber platform to manage my site. It's so easy to use and so powerful. I'm a musician, not a web designer and I don't understand any of the traditional web design tools and don't want to: my job is to create music after all. And the file hosting and all. The community here is so great, always responding, very creative and interesting. I've met here some of my best internet buddies.
All my online promotion gets back to Uber (I have other online presence but only Uber let me personalize my site the way I want easily.
I'd never thought that the economical crisis in Wall Street would affect me that way (I live in Belgium, Europe and don't have any financial values!).
Gosh! Don't know what to say. I'm just sad and in a way revolted.

man it was fun while the party lasted. you know, i wasn't here as much as i would have liked but i have met some awesome people here, and everytime i see these peoples work it inspires me to work harder at what i want to do with my life.
thank you uber folks and chris!
you all rock!
WE NEED TO SET UP A FORUM OR SOME CRAP WE CAN ALL CONNECT AGAIN...

Oh no that is sad news and I just got around using this site right :( I am so sorry . I hope they find a solution and all will work out.
Posted by on September 24, 2008 5:19 PM
My friend. No fuck count today. I am truly, upset. I have a few domains that I've been wanting to use for a while. Maybe you'd want to set up something there in collaboration or something?
Posted by on September 24, 2008 5:15 PM
Well what a shame. I hope it works out for Uber. Too bad to hear the bad news. I really got alot of good vibes from all the people here. I will keep my eye out for anything that comes up. And I hope to keep in touch with alot of you. We may need a new meeting place.
Posted by on September 24, 2008 5:12 PM
Honestly this news really breaks my heart brother! No only is this site useful but I actually met some fantastic people here and hate the thought of loosing contact with them. I also think that Uber stands for everything I believe in and is a great inspiration creatively and for my thought process. It may sound cheesy but yes it had that effect on me.
I really hope this is not final... but if it is... well as sad as it is, we can only move forward right?
I just sent you my info... thanks for the heads up Take care!
Posted by on September 24, 2008 5:10 PM
fuck :( as usual i pulled up a chair with a beer for an entertaining read. i shall raise my bottle and toast the people that made the last 18 months such a blast on uber, thanks very much to them all, i can't imagine the work that went into it all. if it does go tits up, as soon as i find a suitable host for images/blog i'll send you a mail mate. i can't fucking believe this, we were just getting a great little no bullshit community together. fucking cocksucking greedy banks, even i with no financial degree knows that constantly lending the lowest common denominator money hand over fist, people living on credit, is only going to end one way. and while the fat rich fucks sail into the sunset with a fat paycheck, the common man in the street is out of work. it's all just bullshit, and totally avoidable save for a select greedy sector.
we shall rise like a phoenix from the flames, see you all on the other side ;)
Posted by on September 24, 2008 5:08 PM
I wish I could do anything, I'd prefer to pay for a subscription here than to DA for a crappy service. it just sucks.
Posted by on September 24, 2008 5:07 PM
of course this happens when i just ordered my first set of business cards with my uber site on them. :-( this is terrible news. sorry for all those people who lost their jobs... they can join me on the dole.

The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long.
I am confident that we will all have another place to meet, soon.
Posted by on September 24, 2008 5:04 PM
My hopes/sentiments exactly. Man, Darren... I really hope so!
Clearly, this all sucks. It sucks to be in this really weird time politically, economically, and historically... I can appreciate your sentiments and though I didn't really know any of the glue here at Uber, I do know other friends who are heading into their jobs each morning, unsure if they're going to put in a full day at this point.
One thing you've said here that I have to try my best to put your mind at ease -- brother, don't feel bad about bringing any of us here. Seriously! Think of this like a fantastic party, and though you might not have been hosting it, you were told to invite your pals, since we all know -- the more the merrier. You helped introduce a lot of people to one another that might not have normally met under other circumstances. And, these people will surely keep in touch with one another.
This is a good thing you've done, bro. Even if it doesn't feel like it right now. It is.
I'm hoping that things find a way of working out for everyone, and who knows... perhaps this outfit will find a way to stitch another place together for us all. It was working... and that, too, is a good thing.

Say it ain't soooooo...:( No no no. :( God. I can't believe this is happening. Is there any way we can help save it?
Posted by on September 24, 2008 4:46 PM
This is such crap... people just do not understand the liquidity problems facing our current economy... there is no more easy money for business and all it does is hurt new, creative ideas like Uber. It truly saddens me. I was recently laid off from Dell and have been pursuing my dream of moving to 100% income from photography, and Uber has helped me design a site that people respect. I hate fucking dreamweaver..
Any idea of how long we have before it is down? I have to get crack'en on a new site design.. Chris I like your site a ton, just don't have the cash-flow right now to drop $1700 on my site... Arg..
It is a sad, sad day... (Ha and I just made the fresh faces on the front page!)...
Posted by on September 24, 2008 4:43 PM
Everything that comes before its time dies too soon. And what sucks is that this is the way sites will head. Free websites? Why don't more people know about this??? If only we had limitless wealth to fund it ourselves :(
Posted by on September 24, 2008 4:42 PM
Wow...first *photoshelter* now *uber*. Sux man. Sorry state of affairs. I hope the american people come through this time and elect someone sane this time.
But the show must go on...if not on uber then out personal blogs.
The timing could not be worst...i just bought a 5D and was hoping to put some images here, and now this.
Dj AM and Travis, now this...hope you doing well man.
Posted by on September 24, 2008 4:36 PM
WHAT? WTF? GET OUT... no more uber? Is this only news to me? I had no idea this was possibly an issue. Wow, I hope it works out, I'll just die without my uber blog :(
fuck!... that really sucks since uber is such a nice place for hosting a nice web page, not to mention all the amazing people that you can find here... damn!... i'm sad aswell... i'll send you an email with the bookmark... as soon as i find a new site... i just have flickr and dev accounts... and... myspace? lol
Posted by on September 24, 2008 4:07 PM
Well... this sucks. I hope the Uber chief guys are going to find a way to save this beutiful site! (and shut the mouth of laughing clowns...) Will send email and bookmark the new site, anyway. Take care!
Take care, JW
